The towers are good example of late Gothic military constructions. Built in the 15th century as defensive gates for the city, the back of the towers was opened to allow a view of the inside. It was used as a prison for some time.

The towers played a vital part in stopping Napoleon's troops in 1808, during the Peninsular War against the French. The scars left on the towers by cannon balls can still be seen today.
